A few months ago, one of my friends asked me to review his blog and give some suggestions to him. His blog was doing well already but he wants to get the maximum organic search traffic from his content. I am sure like my friend everybody wants to get more website traffic free.
Like most of the people he thinks the more articles you have, the more money you can make from AdSense. To be honest, this is actually not true for most of the cases. Republishing or updating old blog posts is hundred times better than publishing garbage/non-useful content only for the sake of posting new articles regularly. Anyway, We will talk about it later.
The method is the best way to increase website traffic because you it will take very short time to see the results.Right now, I will show you what I did on his blog (or what you will learn in this post) :-
- How to Increases Google organic traffic by 300% in less than 2 weeks,
- How to bring most keywords from spot #15 – spot #25 to spot #1 – spot #3 without spending time or money on SEO or writing new articles.
- How to make an old article viral again and get traffic from Facebook and twitter.
- The best part, you do not need to write new articles always for getting organic traffic. (I did not write or publish any new article on his blog and finally I succeeded in convincing him how publishing articles everyday/every week is not important for generating more organic traffic)
What is content republish/relaunch?
In simple words, content republish/relaunch is to update content in order to fit it in today’s world. Over time, every blog post or article, no matter how much value you put into it while writing, gets outdated. You need to put some recent data and value into it and publish it again.
Here is the status of Google analytic

Apart from Google organic searches, the site also got huge traffic from social media, blogs, forums and directly.

Because the republish brought the old posts to new people, they shared it like crazy. Thus I got new backlinks from real people which hikes my ranking in Google as well.

3 simple steps to get more traffic and leads with “content republish”
So, you are finally ready to know my exact method of how I did. Here it is:-
- Identify old or low performing contents/articles/posts
- Improve or update them
- Republish and promote the articles/content
You may think why not I just posted new articles instead of updating the old posts. Here are some reasons:-
- Show new people the old posts they never saw before: suppose you started your blog/website in 2012 and posted 10 articles that year. Now it is 2016 and you got 15,000 new subscribers this year.
I bet among that 15,000 new subscribers, more than 90% which is 13,500 do not even know that you published some posts in 2012!!!
If you update the content, it will be on front page on wordpress and news feed. Thus more new people will come to know about the posts
- Content improvement: The second and the more important reason of content updating is to make content even better. What was “the best” in 2013 about something, may not even “ok” or “ exist” in 2016.
For example, suppose you published a great article on “Top 10 WordPress Plugins For Social share” in 2013. In that time, people really get benefit from the post. But in 2016, if you take a look at those plugins, you may find some plugins are out of market or another plugin developed after 2013 was far better than that you listed in that post.
On average, I find at least 50% posts of a blog needs update after 6-8 months or so. The content republish will give them freshness and improvement.
Updated content=more traffic=more revenue
- Social proof: Old contents have already likes, shares and comments. When you created the post first time, you did not have any social proof to convince people that the post worth their time to spend. But the republished content has social power from 1st day.

let’s come into the step-by-step process…
step #1. Identify old or low performing contents/articles
The first and most important task of content republish is to find and make a list of posts to republish. There are 4 sources to fiind outdated contents.
- Pages That Rank #7-#15
- Pages Where Organic search Traffic Dropped
- Content That low-Performed
- Content That’s Could Be even Better
- Content older than 1 year
- Content which is no longer relevant/working
Now I am explaining in details how to apply and find contents to republish using the above method
- Pages That Rank #7-#15
Just give me a quick answer. How many times did you click sites ranking in #7-#10 on search engine? For me, I just cannot remember. It is common knowledge that top 5 spots in search results get 70% traffic.

The posts which are currently ranking between #7-#15 can be easily boosted and ranked into top 5 spots.
Now let’s find that pages from google webmaster tool.
- 1 Go to Google Search Consoleand click on “Search Analytics”.

1.2 Then, click on “Impressions” and “Position”

1.3 Now, the core part. Keep the keywords/pages which get lots of impression….but rank within #7-#15.

1.4 Google search analytic will not show you the pages these keywords rank for. To find those pages, click the arrow mark at right side of the keywords. You can use tools like SEMRush or Ahrefs.

You may think why not I take every posts which has ranks between #7-#15. The answer is simple; there are some keywords which does not deliver much traffic. So even if we can achieve #1, these keywords could not deliver much traffic. Working with such keywords does not make sense.
For some people who have 200+ or more outdated content, I will suggest to choose top 5-10 posts which get the maximum impression and low clicks to start updating. Later you can focus the other posts.
2. Pages Where Organic search Traffic Dropped
If you see a page’s organic traffic is dropping day by day, content republish can take it back. To find those pages,
- Go to Google analytics
- Go to Acquisition-> Channels-> Organic Search
- Select “Landing Page” as Primary Dimension
- Check “compared to ” and select a period. For me, I selected last month

- See the graph below

- Time to collect the links. Collect the links where organic visitors dropped.

Wondering why rank drop?
I found the main reason is low CTR (Click Trough Rate). Over time, people lose interest to click on an old post.
For example, if I search for “wordpress theme for business” and I found that spot #1 post was published in 2014 and spot #3 post was published just a month ago. I would definitely click on spot #3 site rather than spot #1 site. I bet 90% people do that. That’s how Google thinks that spot #3 site has more value than spot #1 sites no matter how much seo value you put into that. Thus Google drop your rank for the keywords.
3. Content That low-Performed
It happens to every person in the world no matter what you do.you have some content which did not performed well. The reason maybe you did not know content promotion strategy at that time or luck did not favor you. To find the low-performed posts,
a) Go to Google analytics
b) Go to Behavior-> Overview
c) Under “Site Content” select “Page Title”
d) Check “compared to ” and select a period. For me, I selected last month

4. Content That’s Could Be even Better
Believe it or not, like blogs, a blog post never completed. No matter how much effort you put into a post, it still has chances to improve to make it even better.
5. Content older than 1 year
Do you have posts older than 1 year ago? If yes, and if you think it was up-to-date, you are wrong. Count them in.
6. Content which is no longer relevant/working
Some people may wonder how content can be irrelevant over time. This is how it works:- suppose you are an affiliate marketer and have a blog. You posted an article “software xyz reviews ” or “Top 10 software for doing x ” in 2013. In 2016 if you may find some company or some software you listed no longer exists. Even if your post still gets traffic, your reputation and trust will be badly affected by the readers.
Or you may find another software launched after 2013 which was much better but is not appeared on your post.
Now that you’ve found a piece of articles/content for The Content Republish, it’s time to improve that content.
Step #2: How to improve your content 5 times better (or update it)
- Updated Images and Screenshots
Old images and screenshots make reader feel that the post may not contain recent information that they are searching. Thus they abandon the site which increases bounce rate. Needless to say that this decreases traffic. Here are some tips.
With a simple twist you can change the situation
Suppose you have a SEO niche blog and the post contain an old screenshot like below

Change it with a new screenshot like below

It is simple and takes less than 60 seconds but very effective to keep reader more than 120 seconds on the site!!!
2. Improve post structure:
A simple question, ask yourself “what make you eager to know more about your sisters(or someone else’s) study – “how was her class going on or what marks he got in exam”
90% people will choose to know about the marks. Why? Because it is human nature to have interest in the result/output.
You can apply this method in your blog post. Take a look at the old posts and just imagine how it benefited people. Your task will be a bit easy since you have lots of comments on the old page.
For example, suppose your posts are “Top 10 SEO software reviews” which was published 2 years ago. Now check at the comments section and you will find what people think about those seo software. Some people will share positive sides and what he got using these software.
These comments are a indicator that your post is worth following or at least reading to others. Use it as a review and add it on the republished post.
How?
Suppose if a person comments “hi, thanks for the information. I applied your tips and used software x and got my main keyword ranked in Google within 30 days. My site was brand new and I choose a hard keyword!!!!! ”
Now, turn the comments into a sub-title and add it into the republished posts. You can make it like this:-
“How a brand new site ranked for hard keywords within 30 days”
3. Add long tail keywords:
Content republishing does not mean to update only the contents, you should update the on-page optimization as well. Use long tail keyword to get traffic from more keywords. Here are the steps I follow:-
- Make a list of your competitor’s websites which rank #1-#10 for your primary keywords.
- Go to Ahrefs
- Insert the link(use the exact URL option)
- Go to Organic Keywords section and you will get huge long tail keywords. Add them into your content. When people search those keywords, your site will get natural backlinks from others. This will increase organic traffic from new keywords
Do not just edit the existing content and insert the keywords just for the sake of SEO benefit. The best way to add long tail keyword is to add some new sections and write something which is relevant to your topic but not contain the target/primary keyword. For example, if your post is about “seo tips”, add a new section “what is SEO”. This is not your primary keywords, but these will have huge traffic.

4. Add a New Case Study
People like case study. As the name refers “study” can give different results to same “case”. That’s why the more recent it is, the better it is. If you have any case study, do not think second time to update it.
5. Investigate and answer Common Reader Questions
This is what makes content republish so effective. To proceed, do:-
- Open a text file
- Go to the comments section of old content
- Read carefully the comments and keep notes of important questions people asked into the text file.
- Investigate and research again the answers and add the new information into the content
6. Tell a store:
You do not need always to write what you got useful to share or write. Write how you got it or how the topic come into your mind.
7. Add something new:
Change is the order of nature. What is “latest” today, will become “out-of-date” tomorrow. New thing will come and either the old thing would change or disappear. This is true for any niche.
Research the topic again. Gather new information and add it into the post.
8) Add an infographic:
Infographic is the best way to tell a detailed story in an image. The second benefit, infographic becomes viral pretty easy which will results in huge traffic. Make sure you put your site name on the infographic.
9) Video tutorial:
YouTube has already change the internet world. Create a video tutorial and upload it into your YouTube Channel. Put a link of your post in Video description on YouTube.
Step #3: Time To Republish
Now, we have completed step #1 and step #1. We have identified old posts and update the content as well. Now, here comes the step #3, the final step of content republish.
Here is what you should do(and obviously I do):
3.1 Change the “published” date in WordPress
This is very much important to follow in two ways. First, the newly published content/post will be displayed at the top of your blog news feed.
In WordPress, it is needless how easy it is.

Change the date and make it today

Then update the post.
Some things to remember:
- By default, WordPress show the publish date like this “ April 3, 2016 ” . Change it into “Last updated Sep. 28, 2016” .You can use the plugin WP Last Modified
- If you are sure enough that changing meta title and description will increase CTR, change it. Otherwise, do not change meta title and meta description if your post is in rank for a primary keyword. If it is essential to change meta title and meta description, do not remove/edit the ranking keywords. In general, I would advise no to remove/edit these but you can add some new words.
For example, if I have a post “top 10 WordPress theme for e-commerce in 2014”. I am pretty sure, nobody will click on the sites on Google when they see the number “2014”. In this case, change it. One important fact , CTR is the most important factor in ranking now-a-days.
- I recommend not using date in comments. If you display date in comments, it will create confusion when readers see that the comments are 2 years old. However, if your site shows date and time in comments, remove it. If it is not possible for you, add a note at the bottom of the post that says: [We originally published the content on x date/time].
Permalink:
- Do not use any permalink structure with date. However, if your post link has dates, I would suggest not to change the permalink. Doing so may give you 404 errors for the old URL and lose all social signals you got for that link. However, if you are desperate and did not get enough social share in the old posts, you can do a 301 redirect. You can use this plugin.
3.2 Promote content:
There are many free ways to promote contents. These are new, simple and creative ways. You will get massive traffic and exposure for your content.
Let people know you have conducted a case study recently and come with a result. Follow the steps mentions at “improve post structure” . even though if some of the people who read the old post a few days ago, will be eager to read the article and see the updated results.
Now the million dollar question is how to reach the people. My favorite method is “Targeted email outreach” .
How to do targeted email outreach:
- First make a list of email address who comments on that old contents/posts.
- Find who/which sites linked your old contents. Make a list of sites which gave you backlinks. You can get the backlink sources from SEMRush or Ahrefs.
- Do a Google search using the below queries:-
post title + “author name”
post title + “domain name”
You will see the sites which mention your posts and linked to that content.
Now you have a email lists who are highly targeted and interested in the post. Now time to do the operation.
Send them a mail mentioning the new contents/posts. Here I give a sample

Here is the reply mail came to me within 2 days

The above strategy will work if you are a well-known person in the industry. What to do if you are new in the niche/industry or if your old post did not get enough links/mentions. Here is how I do it:-
- Make a list of content similar to yours (your competitors) from google search
- Find sites/people who shared those contents.
- Contact them and tell them about your republished content which is better and updated than what they linked in their site.
3.3 Share the post on Twitter and other social networking sites
Make sure you write/highlight the new things of the post. Put the new features on front so that it drag people’s attention. The best way is to write about the output/result that you got/they can get from the post.
3.4 promote the republished content on Facebook:
Step #1:
Create a video version of the post
Step #2:
Now go upload that directly to Facebook
Step #3:
get the embed code for the video, and insert it into your republished post
now Facebook will do the rest of the work.
How?
Whenever people see the video into your posts, they will click it. Fb will think the content seems to be popular because of getting clicks and show it more often in front of your FB audience. So new fans will see the republished content. This will give you tons of leaser targeted traffic.
Needless to say, among those new readers, some will like, share and comments on your videos . This will create exposure among their friends.
You can also use your own ideas for content promotion. This will boost website traffic.
How to use “content republish” strategy in e-commerce and portfolio(or any type) sites:
You may think this strategy can only be applicable to blogs. But honestly I think you can implement it on any type of websites. Here I am telling how to use it on e-commerce site. Many people are blogging to increase traffic to their website.
- I assume you already have a blog in your e-commerce website since the strategy name is content “republish” rather than “publish”
- Find the posts which are information based, but not product centric posts. Suppose, local business supplies office meals. They have a blog post “how to ensure employee wellness through office meals”. You can republished that old content and make it “how company X increased employees productivity by 35% through office mean(case study)”
Apart from content republish, there are many tips to get more traffic . You can instantly boost your website’s traffic or increase organic website traffic .
If you are a blogger, using the strategy mentioned here, you can increase traffic to blog, blogger, WordPress, tumblr, blogspot or any other sites. If you run a niche sites like fashion or food blog, the same goes for you.No matter weather you run a personal or professional blog, I’m sure you will get more traffic to your blog.
Now…. It’s your time to act
Hope you enjoy the article and I would like to hear from you.
